Hey everyone! Quick question: what is your all-time favorite Roswell fanfic and why?It can be based on the new, or original show. I really enjoy knowing what attracts people to certain genres and tropes. Links are highly appreciated.

So I think it's only fair that I start by answering my own question. Roswell (1999)From the old show, my favorite fic is definitely Spin by incognito. It can be found here: SpinI am trying to come up with an explanation about why I love this fic so much, but I'm not sure. It's CC, AU with aliens, which I don't normally enjoy. I think because of the way it is written. It's Liz POV, and told in present tense. I was still in high school when I first read it (I think circa 2000/2001) and I remember I stayed up all night and suddenly it was 4 in the morning and I was bawling my eyes out, trying to be quiet so as to not awake my parents. It's not even a particularly sad story. But the characters are so flawed and portrayed so in such a matter-of-fact way that it really resonated with me. I have read it 3 or 4 times since (I printed it out and had it bound), but not in 15 years or so. I think I need to read it again to see if I still have such a visceral reaction to it. Roswell, NM (2019)From the new show, I can't say at this moment there is much choice. I have so far found exactly 3 fics online, which I have consumed as they come. I can't wait for more. At this point my favorite has been a one shot called In The Morning by Miya_Morana. It can be found here: In the morningIt's a character study of Michael, in the aftermath of the reunion, regarding his and Alex's relationship. I think it's very telling, and goes very much along the impression I got of him from the pilot.

Spin is such a classic! Honestly, it's one of my favorite fics, too! You're so right about the style of the story because I honestly started off hating 1st person POV, but incognito did such a tremendous job with it. It was such a flawless, easy-to-read treat. And it was so funny! Uniquie, as well, because Tess in that story...I felt so sorry for and just adored. <3
Back when I didn't want my mom to know I was reading fanfiction, I printed it off and hid it in one of those legal envelopes under my bed. Incognito had started a new fic in Max's POV, and sadly never finished it. She was a terrific author and enjoyed her writing tremendously.
Now, I broke my fanfiction-reading virginity with stories by Linda (Linda Crazy 4 Jason?). She wrote Us Six Against the World which I think you can still find on Crashdown.com. I remember devouring that story...even though it was a rating I definitely should not have been reading. lol. Breathless had some amazing stories. Captive Hearts was an epic that I started re-reading a few months ago, and got sucked back into the beauty of her writing. *sigh* I also wish I had her talent.
Truthfully, it's hard for me to designate a favorite, simply because I've read so many and there are so many different genres: CC, AU, UC...I read my first UC RF, by an author who I can't remember now, sadly...but it was Polarist story (that ended Dreamer) titled Desperate Times Calls for Desperate Measures (I think). Oh, man, that was a good story. Very suspensful.
Man, I can talk fanfic all day! I unfortunately haven't read any Roswell, NM fic yet. Mostly because I hopped on the computer days after the show aired to start trying to figure out how a new Roswell, NM board would look. lol. And I honestly didn't think people had started them so soon, but that pleases me! Hopefully many, many more people join the Roswell, NM fandom and give us lots of good stuff to read.

Oh I remember Core. I was devastated when she didn't finish it. That and her other story Discombobulation which also was never finished - but I have also left a fic abandoned, so I really can't complain. And believe it or not Captive Hearts was the first fic I ever read - it had just posted chapter 18 when I discovered Jen's board and I just kept coming back for updates. Breathless is probably the reason I got addicted to fanfic I the first place. It was sooo good. (I also tried to print this one out while visiting my grandparents - not a good idea. There were so many pages I ended up with so much paper that it was impossible to ever get it into a book - at some point I had to use the paper as draft paper). I remember the Us Six Against the World trilogy, It was so good! To be honest I think I read every single dreamer fic in the Crashdown After-Hours section (even though I definitely should not have been reading them either). But my favorite from there was definitely LivE's The Experiment Series. That had such an awesome world and backstory to it - and I read it well into the next generation's stories. (But I can't lie, I learned everything there was to know about sex as a teen from fanfic - which is why I am never having children, I wouldn't know how to raise them - how do you keep kids from things like Phaedra's Same Time Next Month?) I never got into Roswell UC fics for some reason. Which is why I was so shocked I liked the Michael/Alex storyline so much in the new show. But all is good now, I have developed a much broader mind to fic in the past 20 years.

BAHAHA! You sound like me! I love this. So many of us had similar experiences all at the same time, and didn't even realize it.
And trust me: I didn't go looking for UC fics! I don't remember if DTCFM had it labeled as UC, as I certainly didn't intend to read a UC fic. And truthfully, the UC-ness didn't happen until the middle, and then that was that. It went back to Dreamer. BUT IT WAS SO GOOD.
Oh my God, Phaedra. This is seriously taking me down memory lane. I can't. Those were such good old days!

I know - it's so funny because at the time I was sure I was the only person doing these things (and feeling like I was crazy) and then you realize how universal these experiences are. Why are teens so dramatic? Ah... I read plenty of fics that went UC in the middle but finished dreamer - maybe I'll try and track this one down.

OMG I loved Captive Hearts! I was addicted to Deejonaise's fics for a long time. My favorites were Yours and The Way Love Goes. I think my all time favorite was Innocent by Mockingbird. That one seriously gutted me the first time I read it. It was like End of the World emotional gutting at certain parts. Plus, I loved how she told the story from different perspectives and alternated between the future and the past. The story from beginning to end had me hooked. OMG, RachelEM, I was searching through the similar thread to this on RF and I saw this... YOU NEED TO POST THAT AND FINISH IT. I also loved Strong, Dangerous, and Undeniable by Destinee, posted in two links, but it was never finished This is making me want to sit around and re-read everything all day.

OMG!!! Innocent began my obsession with St. Petersburg!!! (I never admitted that to anyone in real life, though). I was so happy when I finally made it to Russia a couple of years back, and I completely fell in love with the place. And Deejonaise's fics were so awesome! I definitely need to go through a deep re-read of Rosfic classics!!! I remember waiting for Strong, Dangerous and Undeniable to update, and being so sad when the first couple of years went by and kept my hope alive... And Rachel, yes, please finish Absence Makes the Heart Grow Bitter!!! I have never read it, but it seems massive, and the summary has definitely got my interest picked.

OMG, haha, St. Petersburg has been my #1 Bucket List travel place since I first read that fic too!! I used to tell people I read about it in a book! Ahhh, and I'm so jealous you made it there already!! Someday!

Oh goodness, that has me all kinds of embarassed, but also that's the sweetest thing! Who posted that? I'm going to start bringing Absence... over part by part, and hopefully resurrect it completely soon.

I used to tell people I read about it in a book! Are we the same person? That is exactly what I told people.

Do you know anyone who has a link or a copy of Discombobulation by Incognito? I've found both Spin and Core online, and I remember reading Discombobulation years ago and now I can't find it anywhere. I'd love to re-read, even if unfinished. Sigh.
